‘Black Satin’ Blackberry

This beautiful newer variety produces heavy crops of large, firm, oblong blackberries with a delicious, sweet flavour. ‘Boreal Blizzard’ Haskap

Boreal Blizzard is one of the first larger berried varieties set to completely change the Haskap industry! It was so named because the fruit size, productivity, and flavour stopped the breeders in their tracks. Berries are more than twice as heavy as ‘Tundra’ or ‘Borealis’. This variety is an excellent choice for home growers, U-picks and commercial harvester type orchards. The first release of the Boreal series that flowers and ripens later than previous UofS cultivars. Cross-pollination is required. ‘Coconut Ice’ Peach

A white-fleshed peach variety that matures middle to late in the harvest season. The fruit skin of ‘Coconut Ice’ has a lower amount of anthocyanin than other varieties, and in ‘Coconut Ice’ the overcolour is pink-red.

‘Diamond Harrow’ Peach

Winter-hardy and disease-resistant! An early, medium-sized variety with pretty pink blooms to perk up the spring landscape. Fruit has an attractive, 70% scarlet skin over a yellow background with a firm, deep yellow flesh and excellent flavor. High resistance to bacterial spot and brown rot, and has few split pits. A very nice fresh-eating freestone variety that is also good for canning and preserves. Developed in Ontario, Canada and is quite hardy, which means heavy bud-set — subsequent thinning is required for best results. Ripens in July.

‘Dorris’ Hazelnut

A new hazelnut cultivar, released only in 2011. The tree combines a high resistance to eastern filbert bright (EFB) and bud mites with a high yield of medium nuts with excellent kernel flavour. The flavour and texture are excellent! Hazelnut varieties need a pollinizer:

‘Eclipse’ Asparagus

Eclipse is a green asparagus hybrid, released from the world-leading asparagus breeding program at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. This male dominant cultivar is an improvement on Millennium with increased spear diameter and improved precocity (reaching maturity earlier) means better yields and faster returns. Has great potential to be used for white spear production as well. While it was developed for the commercial industry, the improvements in yield and foliar disease tolerance makes it a great choice for small scale and home producers.

‘Emperor Francis’ Cherry

Make your own maraschino cherries! This is one of the best sweet cherries you’ll find anywhere. Tree is consistently productive. Fruit is perfect for canning jellies and jams or making homemade maraschinos. Best when picked fresh and popped into your mouth like candy. Resists cracking. Introduced to the U.S. circa early 1900s. Ripens in late June. Does not pollinate with Bing.

‘Felix’ Hazelnut

Late season pollinator with high levels of resistance to eastern filbert bright (EFB) and high pollen production, making it a wonderful pollinator. Low nut yields the late blooming of this variety is very helpful for ensuring high nuts yield on other varieties. Nuts are small and round but with low frequency of defects. 1 pollinator is enough to pollinate up to 8 other trees! Hazelnut varieties need a pollinizer:

A long standing heirloom. Widely adapted and cold hardy. Large to extra large, with golden skin and light red blush. Firm flavourful flesh has made this a long standing favourite. Freestone. Originated in Connecticut in 1912.

‘Kalle’ Pear (OHxF87 Semi-dwarf)

A medium to large fruit that is round in shape with a slender neck. It ripens 10 days ahead of Bartlett. The fruit is flavorful and has a bright red skin. Also known as ‘Red Clapp’s’ as it is a mutation from ‘Clapp’s Favorite’.

‘MacDonald’ Hazelnut

High levels of resistance to eastern filbert bright (EFB) and bud mites and very few moldy kernels. Nuts are about 52% kernel by weight, higher than most other hazelnut cultivars. Overall, an early harvest variety with a high kernel yield of excellent eating quality nuts. The kernels blanch easily and have excellent flavour and texture.

‘Millennium’ Asparagus

A cold-hardy asparagus that maintains tip tightness as it grows. Since Millennium is well-adapted to various soil types, including heavier soils, growers can utilize land previously unsuitable for asparagus production. Male crowns which are more productive. Spears are tight, green and large.  Bred by the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, Millennium is becoming the new industry standard for asparagus production. ‘Nijisseiki’ Asian Pear

Also know as “20th Century”. Tree has outstanding ornamental value itself aside from its fruit. Pure white flesh is crisp for snacking. Ripens late August into September. Fruit has long storage life. Discovered in 1888 in Japan.

‘Red Spy’ Apple

The Red Spy Apple Tree is an old variety, originating in NY in the 1800’s. It is similar to Northern Spy but with a much redder skin and bright stripes. The fruit is very tender and juicy and great for cooking as well as storing. Creamy-colored flesh with a sweet-tart flavour that is crisp, aromatic, and juicy. Grafted onto semi-dwarf rootstock.

‘Reliance’ Peach

Cold hardy and widely-adapted. Medium-large peaches are yellow fleshed with a traditional yellow with red blush skin. Excellent for canning, drying, preserves and fresh eating. Released in New Hampshire in 1964.

‘Shineiki’ Asian Pear

Shinseiki is an early ripening fruit with bright yellow skin. Its delicate white flesh is sweet, flavourful and extremely juicy. Shinseiki trees are very precocious, sometimes bearing fruit on our one-year-old grafted trees. Customers in a hurry to taste Asian pears should plant this variety! The pears store very well for such an early season fruit……usually 4-5 months.

Wepster was first developed to supply the chocolate and baking industry! The ideal kernels of 11-13 millimeter size and with kernels weighing 47% of total weight, these are the perfect orchard companion! Also highly resistant to eastern filbert bright (EFB)

Hardy. Pink flowers cover the tree each spring. Medium-sized heart-shaped light orange-coloured fruit with a red blush. Firm flesh is golden-yellow and freestone. ‘White Lady’ Peach

Widely-adapted and mid-late bloomer. Blossoms tolerate fluctuating spring weather conditions well. Requires chill hours of 800-950.

Large peaches have high and unusual skin color (75% to 85% light red blush over white background), and pale, white flesh that begs to be admired. The Low acid/high sugar creates a unqiue flavour, firm white flesh will get your mouth watering. Early-season ripener prefect for the Kootenays and freestone makes it easy to enjoy. Excellent for canning, drying, preserves and fresh eating.

Spicy, edible root rich in many nutrients and minerals, belonging to the plant family Cruciferae (the same family as many vegetables the common gardener knows well – cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower!). Very forgiving plant that can tolerate many different sun exposures but does best in full sun to partial sun. If you’re short on room, even consider growing this wonderful plant in a container!
