Plant Details

Latin: Hippophae rhamnoides

Hardiness Zone: 2 – 7

Height: 5′ – 10′

Spread: 5′ – 10′

Bloom Time: Early Spring

Ripens: September-October

Flower Colour: Yellow, Inconspicuous

Fruit Colour: Orange

Foliage Colour: Green

Light Requirements: Full Sun

Soil Requirements: Suited for a range of soils but prefer well-draining. Tolerant of alkaline and salty soils.

Attributes:

  • Edible Fruit
  • Cold Hardy
  • Poor soil tolerant

Special Considerations: Sea buckthorn is dioecious, with separate male and female plants. Flowers emerge prior to the leaves, are localized to the 2nd-year-old wood. Pollination of the female flowers occurs in mid-May and is entirely dependent on wind to spread pollen from the male flowers. Sea buckthorn’s do have thorn-like projections so be cautious when pruning or harvesting the plants.
