Black Jostaberry

$20.00

A gooseberry and currant cross! The rich berry taste is reminiscent of gooseberry with a kiss of black currant. Deep-red, almost-black fruit is high in vitamin C and forms in large clusters, ideal for juices, jams and jellies, and fresh-eating. Cold-hardy plants are long-lived, thornless, and productive once established. Debuted in 1977. The name “jostaberry” itself is a combination of the German word for blackcurrant, “Johannisbeere” and for gooseberry, “Stachelbeere”. Disease-resistant to American gooseberry mildew, black currant leaf spot, white pine blister rust, and big bud gall mite. Ripens in July. Self-pollinating but does well with cross-pollination.

Mojito Mint Transplants

$3.25

Cuba’s famed mojito cocktail, once a daily favourite of Ernest Hemingway, has enjoyed a meteoric resurgence in popularity ever since James Bond drank one in the movie Die Another Day. The mojito, made with rum, sugar, lime juice and Cuba’s unique mojito mint, is now an essential staple of cocktail lounges everywhere. It is clearly different from most other mints – its scent an flavour are agreeably mild and warm, not pungent nor overly sweet like other mints. In a perhaps typically Cuban understated way its warm embrace lingers until you realize you want more. We recommend planting in containers to prevent these vigorous plants from becoming invasive.

Nanking Cherry

Nanking Cherry is a small deciduous shrub known for its attractive white blossoms and edible fruit. Its dark red berries are excellent for pies, jellies, and even fresh eating. It is highly regarded as a shade-tolerant fruit. We often see it planted as a hedge on the north side of a house where few other plants will survive, let alone thrive. Expect fruit mid to late July. The fruit can vary in sweetness and size considerably. We often hear that people prefer it to sour cherries. Perhaps this is because Nanking Cherry is more closely related to plums. Extremely winter hardy

Summer Savory Transplant

$4.50

The ancient Roman writer, Pliny, named the genus ‘Satureja,’ which is derived from the word “satyr,” a half goat and half man mythological being who revelled in all savory delights. It was these ancient Romans that introduced the herb to England around the time of Caesar’s reign. Both winter and summer savory have a strong peppery flavour, although winter savory has a more pungent flavour than summer. Both herbs can be used in a variety of foods and help to enliven flavour without the use of additional salt and pepper. Savory is not only used in a variety of culinary preparations, but the dried leaves are often added to potpourri. Winter Savory Transplant

For this reason, winter savory herbs are often paired with beans during cooking since the addition of salt at that time would toughen the beans. Savory is not only used in a variety of culinary preparations, but the dried leaves are often added to potpourri. The fresh or dried leaves can also be used to infuse vinegar, herb butters or steeped for tea. Hardy to zone 5.
